How do today's fires compare with the Ash Wednesday fdores in 1983?

* 47 people were killed, 2,800 homes destroyed and 210,000 hectares burnt when more than 100 fires started on February 16, 1983, which became known as Ash Wednesday.

Fire experts have said that today's predicted temperatures of 44C degrees and severe northerly winds present a worse fire danger than Ash Wednesday.
